Why is it so important to diagnose automatic transmission in a timely manner?
Our experience shows that in most cases, before a complete breakdown of an automatic transmission in a car, the first symptoms of a transmission malfunction begin to appear in the form of: kicks, jerks, slippage, computer errors, there are problems with switching speeds, in order to avoid a complete breakdown of the automatic transmission and the high cost of repair of gearbox, it is necessary to stop operating the cars in time and contact a specialist to diagnose the automatic transmission On average, in 4 out of 10 cases of timely contact to the technical center, it is possible to eliminate the malfunction in time and avoid expensive repairs. Why do I need transmission diagnostics?
As many well know, in the medical field the right and professional diagnosis is a key factor for the successful treatment of patients. The same is true with automatic transmission systems of the cars — proper and professional diagnosis is needed to find the source of the problem and then to solve it.

Quite frequently clients contact us with a complaint about the incorrect operation of the gearbox. Many had watched videos on the Internet or listened to advise of so-called experts. Among them basically, you can find 2 categories of clients — one category of individuals is sure that there is need to change the oil and to make some programming in computer, but others are immediately ready for large expenses, confident that serious repairs are needed.

This is the reason why there is a need for a professional diagnosis of automatic transmission systems. Often on closer inspection appears that there are no serious problems with the transmission system — there is a need to change only a sensor or to fix electronical settings. Or sometimes there are no problems with the transmission system at all, but the problem is connected with the control system of the engine or ABS and so on. In modern cars, electronic control units fail quite often, and that is less costly repair work. Therefore, do not worry if the transmission system of your car suddenly starts to play a "joke" on you. In our practice, there was a case when the transmission system of the car gave an alarm signal just because of a malfunction of 2 glow plugs in a diesel engine.

Therefore, high-level diagnosis includes more than the use of equipment for diagnosis – now such equipment had all repair shops. Qualitative diagnosis includes deep analysis which is based on experience and knowledge. It is the ability not only to read the errors recorded in the system, but also to know what parameters should be indifferent components of control systems, both in the transmission and in other systems. And even more — often there is a need for a test drive with appropriate diagnostic equipment.

Often a correctly made diagnosis helps to avoid costly repairs in the future. But it happens, seeming at first glance not significant deviations in the transmission, indicate the need for major repairs. Anyway, after professional diagnostics, you will know for sure, whether major repairs are required or not. We will never tell, that major repairs are required if this is not the case.
How to maintain the transmission?
Some people think that service/maintenance of automatic transmission systems includes just changing the oil and filter. But that is not entirely correct. The service includes a set of works, after which your transmission is likely to work well for a longer period of time.

The fact is that the transmission system, like any other mechanism in the car, has a certain resource of work. And when the vehicle's mileage approaches this virtual tipping point (let's say it is 250 000 km) it is very difficult to predict and to guarantee that after changing the oil, the transmission will pass another 50 000 km. Any new oil has detergent properties; therefore, it must be taken into consideration that after changing the oil the leftovers of dirt and varnish that have accumulated in the transmission over the years will be washed off and fall back into the system, which is fraught with clogging of the hydraulic control unit, filters, pressure sensors and much more.

Therefore, transmission maintenance means, first of all, determining and agreeing with the client what kind of replacement needs to be done. There is a so-called partial replacement (this is a routine replacement provided by the transmission manufacturer, given that the transmission was regularly serviced). Another option - complete oil change. It is required if the transmission has not been serviced for a long time, if the oil is visually very dirty or if there are some components or objects in the oil, such as antifreeze. Then, of course, you also need to fix the problem due to which the antifreeze got into the transmission.

Not all car repair shops can offer such a replacement, because this requires a special expensive stand and a large number of adapters for different transmission models.

Keep in mind that a complete oil change is much more expensive, since this includes flushing the system and, accordingly, involves a large consumption of new oil. Therefore, we recommend not to make a complete oil change unless it is really necessary. But if the client insists, we will not refuse. We just want to help you save your money as much as possible, because as already mentioned, changing the oil does not guarantee anything for vehicles with high mileage. And it will be very disappointing if, after an expensive, complete oil change, after a short time, the transmission still breaks down… What's the point in such investments?

Secondly, maintenance involves analyzing different kinds of leftovers in the gearbox pan or on special magnets located in the pan, or on the drain plug. By the presence of leftovers, professional workshop workers can understand what exactly is worn out in the transmission, and approximately how much these mechanisms can still work. This is very useful information for the car owner.

And thirdly, maintenance includes electronic adjustment of some parameters, such as oil oxidation, mileage interval until the next change, adaptation values, if necessary.

Our observations: if you regularly do service/maintenance of transmission system (every 40 000 or 50 000 km), this can extend its service life by 100 000 or 150 000 km.

We do not want to say that we are the best in our field. Here in Latvia You can find several high-level firms. But sadly, here exists those who only think that they are able to repair of automatic transmission systems. But in this complicated field it is important to have great experience, resources and sense of responsibility. Remember, there is a big difference between ability to express themselves skillfully by phone and excellent work – often it is not the same. So, if you find in internet somebody who claims that there will be no problems to help you, think: what confirms personally to you that you will not have any regrets later on? How is the transmission repaired?
Repair of the mechanical part.

Usually, after disassembling the transmission, you can almost immediately see some faulty parts. It could be burnt clutch discs, broken gears or shafts, worn connections, etc. When we are checking the condition of the automatic transmission system, we are trying to not only see the broken parts but understand the reason for their breakdown. After all, if you do not understand why these parts broke down, then most likely, after a short time after the repair, this breakdown may recur. To understand the cause, it is often not enough just to think that the breakdown was simply due to wear and tear associated with vehicle mileage. The reason may be not noticeable at first glance malfunctions. For example, a breakdown of the mechanical part of the transmission may be associated with low pressure in the system, overheating, or poor lubrication system. Also, the cause may be malfunctioning in the hydraulic control unit or electronic unit. In order to correctly assess the scale of the problem, you need a lot of experience with this particular type of transmission. We often have to redo repair works of gearboxes that have already been in some workshops before us. but due to the lack of experience and knowledge of the workers in previous workshops, we have to redo everything, and customers re-pay for all repairs, despite the fact that a decent amount has already been spent. It depends on the experience and knowledge of the master performing the repairs how much the transmission will still work after the repair. Almost all the parts that we install during the repair are new. They do not always have to be from the original manufacturer since there are many manufacturers on the market that offer parts that are not inferior in quality, but much cheaper. To choose the best option for price and quality, you also need experience with different manufacturers, because this is the only way to understand what will really work reliably. Usually, during repair, repair kits are used, which include absolutely all cuffs, elastic bands, etc. To replace all this, the gearbox must be disassembled. This is a very time-consuming process, and some masters believe that this is not necessary. But this is the only way to ensure that all the little things will be considered, and over time, none of the cuffs will break. In fact, in the process of repairing little things do not exist. And it is precisely such an attentive approach that allows us to give a guarantee after repair up to 2 years.

Repair of the torque converter.

Torque converter – this is a mechanism, the condition of which cannot be determined without opening, although there are some signs by which you can understand whether it is working properly or not. Even if there are no visible signs indicating its breakdown, a high-quality transmission repair is not conceivable without opening and subsequent repair of the torque converter. Inside it is mechanisms that are also subject to aging, wear and tear or overheating. Therefore, we always repair torque converters, since they are an integral part of the transmission, on which both the quality of the transmission and its durability depend.

Repair of the hydraulic control unit and its electronic components.

Since many car owners forget that regular maintenance is required in the gearbox, hydraulic blocks wear out, clog up and eventually cause transmission breakdown. To make defect detection and repair of this unit, a special diagnostic tool is needed, as well as quite a lot of special tools for its repair. This is one of the most difficult transmission repair jobs that require great care and experience. After all, one awkward movement when reaming a worn hole for a working valve can lead to the fact that the entire valve body will be damaged, and it will need to be replaced. And it is costly. Therefore, many are simply afraid to do this, leaving this unit not restored, and this will not improve the operation of the transmission. Of course, there are types of transmissions in which these blocks wear out so much that repairs do not make sense, as its cost approaches the cost of a new one. And the cost of some blocks purchased directly from manufacturers is significantly lower than from official dealers of certain car brands. Then we definitely recommend that the client install a new valve body, as this allows to achieve perfect operation of the transmission after repair, at a relatively low price. We always consider the expediency of such repairs and try to find the best option for the car owner. Valve body repair also includes repair or replacement of solenoid valves.

Automatic transmission system repair – this is a very complex chain of actions that requires a really great experience, knowledge, quality details, an honest and conscientious approach.
